U.S. Highway 169, known as the Cross Range Expressway, is the primary freight and passenger highway connection between Grand Rapids, Hibbing, and Virginia. This seventy mile distance was completed to a four lane divided highway between the 1960s and 1994, except for approximately 9.5 miles between Coleraine and Pengilly which was left as two lane undivided highway.
