Project Description

These technologies will increase public safety through the deterrence of crime, assist in the investigation of criminal activity and allow for the speedy apprehension of offenders. The implementation of these technologies will assist the Whiting Police Department in its efforts to increase public safety and will positively benefit children attending Whiting Public Schools, the residents of Whiting, the businesses of Whiting, the MARSEC-designated area of the BP Whiting Refinery, and the hundreds of thousands of visitors hosted by the community each year.\r\n\r\nLPRs are installed in most communities throughout Northwest Indiana and have been continually proven effective. Whiting currently has only one Reader positioned along its southern most boundary. This LPR allowed for the apprehension of a murder suspect within days of its installation. Additional LPRs will provide fuller coverage and will enable officers to apprehend criminal suspects that travel through Whiting, but who avoid the single intersection where the current Reader is in place. The City of Whiting sits at the nexus of the City of Chicago and LPRs installed along State Road 20/Indianapolis Boulevard, a heavily-trafficked corridor that connects communities and often is used by perpetrators, will fill a significant gap in coverage.\r\n\r\nBeyond those accused of illicit activity, LPRs increase public safety for the elderly, particularly those for whom Silver Alerts are issued. The City of Whiting is particularly sensitive to needs such as these, resulting from the large percentage of senior citizens who make their home in this community.\r\n
