Project Description

This project is designed to broadly benefit the community, both as important improvements for current residents, and as a means to enable growth and investment. It not only creates parking, a much needed local infrastructure to support critical housing and economic development, but it does so while addressing blight and converting abandoned lots into functional and taxable property under good stewardship. This approach ensures that nearby development does not displace or inconvenience existing residents but instead remediates blight and beautifies the area while enabling future downtown investments to advance. \n\nAlso, this work is in direct support of the development of affordable housing, an oft discussed concern in the Pittsburgh area where numerous studies refer to a shortage of as many as nearly 20,000 affordable residential units needed to properly accommodate demand. Another local entity has committed to building a new 36-unit, multi-story, affordable apartment building with 1st floor commercial space along Chartiers Avenue. MRCDC and ACTION Housing are excited to advance this project that creates new, well-managed housing in a walkable area with good transit access and other amenities nearby but additional parking must be built to enable this project, and other investments like it, to happen in the downtown area. This work is critical to allaying resident and municipal concerns.\n\nFinally, this work supports downtown investment that will immediately grow the local tax base while making capital investments that don\u2019t require ongoing assistance. Solely intended as a one-time investment in local improvements, and as non-programmatic funding, there are no ongoing overhead costs that will require sustained additional financial support.
