Project Description

This $5 million project will improve pedestrian and vehicle safety with updates to outdated traffic lights and unsafe sidewalks on a stretch of roadway from Park Avenue and 51st Street to Hackensack Plank Road and 19th Street in Weehawken, New Jersey. A large stretch of the project area has traffic signals over 40 years old, many of the intersections do not have crossing light signals for pedestrians, nor do they have any signaling for the visually impaired. Additionally, portions of the sidewalks are under 3 feet wide, with telephone poles taking up to 1 foot of the sidewalk in some sections. It is nearly impossible to safely travel on this roadway in a wheelchair or with a children\u2019s stroller. These sidewalks and traffic lights do not meet current State & Federal Americans with disabilities guidelines and signalized roadway crossing standards. The sidewalks will be widened ($2 million) and new traffic lights will be purchased and installed ($3 Million) in order to meet State and Federal standards and improve the safety of those living in and commuting through Weehawken, NJ.
