Project Description

To support the creation of a center for workforce development and applied research in health, science and cybersecurity that will serve as a nexus for campus-wide outreach, research and service by engaging academic departments and programs from all three of the University\u2019s colleges and schools.\r\nThe center would improve the University\u2019s ability to accomplish its mission of higher education as an institution of purely public charity while providing direct benefits to the community. The center would:\r\nenhance current and support new outreach efforts in health, STEM and cybersecurity, with special emphasis on engaging K-12 students;\r\nstrengthen and expand a strategic partnership with the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce;\r\nleverage existing, long-standing relationships with regional non-profits, businesses, K-12 schools, government and healthcare providers; and\r\nsupport the establishment of new and innovative academic programs, including programs in engineering and health sciences and cybersecurity.\r\nThe center would be housed in a facility that would include the following:\r\ntraining and education space to support workforce development outreach on cybersecurity, STEM and health sciences; \r\na specialized suite of simulation spaces and clinical rooms to support research, instruction and service in a variety of health care areas, including new health science programs and existing programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, counseling, speech and language pathology, and applied behavioral analysis;\r\nclinical spaces to support existing and emerging programs in health sciences; \r\nspecialized and interdisciplinary laboratories to support research, instruction and service by existing and emerging academic programs, especially STEM programs; and\r\na multipurpose gathering space to host events and activities, including events with community leaders, school groups and other partners, and guest spaces for visiting scholars, researchers and lectures.\r\n
