Project Description

Marion County is requesting $2,000,000 for a pavement rehabilitation project along the entire County Road G28 corridor. Funding of this magnitude would allow another roadway rehabilitation project within Marion County to be completed in the next five years. This 1,500 - 2,400 vehicle per day roadway is proving from pavement condition ratings, our pavement management system, and driver feedback that it is due for improvement. Since 2002 this roadway has not had a major rehabilitation, in that same time frame traffic volumes have increased nearly 70%. In preparation for a future pavement rehabilitation project Marion County has appropriated nearly $350,000 of Farm-to-Market funds for patching on G28. Marion County is unique in the fact that it has two county seat sizes of towns (Knoxville and Pella) and Iowa\u2019s largest lake (Red Rock) within its borders. \n\nAs a result of these key features, tourism provides nearly a $55 Million economic impact to our county. G28 is one of Marion County\u2019s major corridors, largely servicing the Pella community and a majority of the available County and Corps of Engineer\u2019s (COE) recreational parks around Lake Red Rock. Nearly one million recreational tourists visit Marion County for the camping, boating, water trails, hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. each year, largely through the G28 corridor. G28 provides access to three campgrounds, two cabin sites, a marina, multiple public hunting areas, multiple boat ramps, the Cordova Observation Tower, multiple day use sites, shelters, and large group venues. Additionally, this road services many adjacent subdivisions and rural residential districts that provide residence to our counties manufacturing-based labor force. As tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing continue to grow in our community, it is our duty to provide sufficient means of transportation. This roadway corridor is a vital link for all these industries and the economics of Marion County as a whole.
