Van Buren County Hospital
This project request is an excellent use of taxpayer funds because as a critical access hospital, Van Buren County Hospital truly is critically important to the residents of the communities it serves. During the COVID-19 pandemic demand for services increased even more and continues to remain high. The hospital\u2019s emergency department, inpatient unit, outpatient services department and rural health clinics have all increased their volumes.\n\nOur last census illustrates the need in our community for maintaining quality healthcare services close to home. Van Buren County is very rural, with 7,203 residents at the time of the last census. The census told us that 22.5% of our residents are age 65 or above and 14.4% of our population lives in poverty. It showed that 10.2% of our population that is under the age of 65, is living with a disability. These statistics match up with the fact that over 65% of the hospital\u2019s revenue in any given year comes from Medicare and Medicaid.
