Project Description

The Fair Haven Community Health Care expansion project at 374 Grand Avenue will increase the availability of primary medical and behavioral health care for all, but especially the underserved, at risk and low income families who otherwise have no access to quality affordable health care. The proposed construction will be at the corner of James Street and Grand Avenue, the entryway to the Fair Haven neighborhood, adjacent to the existing health center. The existing facility is over 100 years old and no longer able to grow with the needs of the community. These funds will be used to support the design and construction of a new 33,500 square foot health center including exam rooms, lab, pharmacy and community meeting space; with additional space, we will be able to expand the number of clinicians and appointments currently available.\n\nWith this new construction, the Health Center will add an estimated net new 40 to 50 full-time jobs with benefits. The construction activity will also create an additional 45 to 55 full-time equivalent jobs with greater than 30% filled by minority and women owned subcontractors. The Health Center serves as both a safety net medical resource and an economic engine for the highly distressed Fair Haven neighborhood which is federally designated as a medically underserved area and an economic opportunity zone. \nThis expansion project is an outstanding example of the good use of taxpayer funds as these funds will enable the project to move forward. Other funding sources include the State of Connecticut, New Market Tax Credits and private philanthropy. Once built, the daily costs to run the health center, such as payroll, is covered through the medical care provided. The Community Project Funding is required solely for the one-time cost of constructing the new building.
