Project Description

Brownsville Community Development Corporation (DBA BMC Family Health and Wellness Centers) respectfully requests a $2,875,000 Community Project Funding grant to cover the cost of equipment for the Brownsville Multi-Service Health Hub, a new 50,000 square foot health center that will be a re-development and expansion of the BMS flagship health center that is located in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. \n\nHealth indicators and outcomes in Brownsville are among the worst in New York City. Brownsville residents experience higher rates of obesity, hypertension, new HIV and Hepatitis C infection, and psychiatric hospitalization relative to their counterparts in the rest of the borough and across New York City. Brownsville residents are also more likely to die before the age of 65. \n\nBMS Family Health and Wellness Centers has a 40-year track record of providing comprehensive, culturally-sensitive, high quality primary healthcare and enabling services to Brownsville residents regardless of their ability to pay. BMS is the largest federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Brownsville serving more than 18,000 individuals in 2021. Nearly all our patients (90%) are low-income (less than 200% of the federal poverty level). All BMS clinical sites are Joint Commission accredited and certified by the National Committee on Quality Assurance as Patient Centered Medical Homes. As a longstanding, trusted and widely known safety net provider, BMS Family Health and Wellness Centers is a vital resource in the ninth congressional district.
