This request will support facility improvements for the purpose of preventing prisoner suicide at the Salt Lake County Jail. The Salt Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Office is committed to providing for the health and safety of the individuals placed in our custody, including the provision of mental health services round the clock. Nationwide, suicide rates amongst the incarcerated have been on the rise. Locally, we have experienced a significant increase in incarcerated individuals with serious mental health disorders. In the last 10 years, we had over 80 individuals attempt and 3 individuals complete suicide by jumping from the upper tier. Installing suicide barriers on all upper tiers in the Jail's four pods will provide a safer environment for inmates as well as our county staff by preventing opportunities for mentally ill prisoners to engage in self-harm. Suicide attempts have resulted in loss of life and immense trauma for other inmates who have witnessed those instances as well as our staff who oversaw responses to these emergencies. The installation of these barriers will prevent suicide, save lives, and improve the work environment and well-being for our staff.
