My Sister's Place
Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness in the District. The National Network to End Domestic Violence, National Census of Domestic Violence Services (2019) reported that in one day in DC in 2019, there were 11,336 unmet requests for services of which 7,732 (68%) were for housing and emergency shelter. In Washington DC the Census found that victims made 79 requests for\nservices that could not be provided because programs lacked the resources to meet victims' needs. A Domestic Violence Housing Needs Assessment funded by the DC Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants identified a shortage of 300 beds. My Sister's Place's 45-bed shelter is always at capacity. Community project funding will be used to support the maintenance of the current emergency DV shelter, as well as a newly acquired building that will house approximately 18 more families. Both buildings require regular maintenance and continuous upgrades and repairs due to its transitional nature.
