Project Description

Dance Institute of Washington (DIW) requests $1,000,000 in Community Project Funding to advance equity in arts, cultural education and community engagement in all Wards of Washington, DC by providing 1,000 underrepresented students ages 2.5-21 (including African American, Latinx, LGBTQ+ and low income youth) and 6,000 audience members free or affordable access to high-quality pre-professional dance training and humanities rich dance productions and major concerts. These funds will cover critical costs of key staffing, contracting teaching and performing artists, marketing and outreach, program supplies, facilities usage and maintenance, and impact evaluation. DIW will leverage this support to attract and engage matching dollars from generous individuals, foundations, and corporations. DIW advances racial equity by closing opportunity and achievement gaps in workforce development, helping students to reach their goals, and increasing the inclusivity and diverse representation at every level of professional classical concert dance and other dance industries nationally and globally. With evaluation driving its design, DIW serves as an evolving, responsive pipeline for hundreds more dancers of all backgrounds to advance successfully into dance industries.
