Project Description

It is the long-term goal for the Jackson County Department of Transportation to recycle all of its roads in its primary network so that they are \u201cSuper Roads.\u201d Since these roads would be perpetual roads, this would allow the county to only have to perform routing mill and fill projects on these roads every 10-15 years. These roads would be more resilient to freeze/thaw cycles, last longer, provide a better user experience through regular maintenance and smoother rides, and save taxpayer funds from decreased reconstruction cycles every 20-25 years. These roads are much less costly to construct, with estimates as high as 30% less than traditional construction. JCDOT would also virtually eliminate pothole patching on these roads since they are on a regular preventive maintenance cycle. Currently, this section of Airport Road is classified as an All Season Route. By recycling this road into a \u201cSuper Road,\u201d JCDOT would be assured that this road can withstand the heavy truck traffic that this route experiences through the spring thaw. This route is a very busy heavy truck corridor that connects I-94 to the Blackman Township industrial areas to the north, and this area is a large economic driver for the county with further expansion planned in the new industrial park. It is imperative that JCDOT secures the funds to properly reconstruct this corridor in order to ensure growth in our county is able to seamlessly continue. Lastly, improving this corridor by widening to five lanes on the north end of the project, and combining this improvement with the planned motorized and non-motorized safety improvements for this corridor, would greatly enhance quality of life and safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
