Phase 1: Columbus Quantum Test Loop By utilizing assets from the State of Ohio (OARNET) and Ohio State University, with hardware on loan from industry, a loop of fiber approximately ten miles long can be fitted for limited testing of quantum protocols that need to be further developed in order to eventually facilitate true quantum networking. Phase 2: Columbus to Dayton Quantum Test Loop White advancements in quantum networking have been made in laboratory settings, the next level of breakthroughs will require real-world testing in natural environments over long distances. This proposed investment presents a leadership opportunity that would put Ohio in the first wave of locations in the U.S. to have a tested to facilitate the testing, evaluation, and development of quantum computing hardware, software, and protocols. A Loop of this nature would involve the purchase of a quantum-specific fiber, laying it in the ground parallel to OARNET network fiber in select locations, and connecting it at appropriate points with hardware on loan from industry. The Columbus to Dayton corridor would provide a priority connection between Wright Patterson Air Force Base (including AFRL) and Ohio State, while also providing opportunities for other industry and research partners in the Dayton area. This would also lay the groundwork for a long-range connection to work being done in Chicago and New York.\n\nOhio has the opportunity to create a quantum testbed that will position us among an elite group of quantum innovation actors. At present there are only a couple of other U.S. locations with new fiber in the ground at scale and in significant distances.
