Project Description

Based and incorporated in Washington, DC, National Children\u2019s Museum inspires children, birth through twelve, to care about and change the world. After an 18-month closure due to COVID-19, the Museum requests funding to support its staffing, operations, exhibits and programs after reopening in September 2021. While there are more than 500 children\u2019s museums and science centers around the country, Washington, DC was the only major city that did not have either of these institutions while National Children\u2019s Museum completed its capital campaign.\n\nNational Children\u2019s Museum will support the Washington, DC community in the following ways: 1) serve approximately 500,000 visitors annually and fill a need for early childhood learning; 2) provide classrooms from Title I schools with high-quality STEAM field trip experiences based on national Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards; 3) serve as an important component of the region\u2019s career pipeline by increasing interest in STEAM fields at a young age before career aspirations are created; 4) provide an inclusive, welcoming environment for all children and families, including wheelchair accessibility, quiet spaces for neurodiverse children to decompress, and access programs (including free admission) for low income families; and 5) contribute to the recovery of Washington, DC\u2019s downtown economy and the tourism sector.
