Project Description

Middlefield Emergency Services supports the town of Middlefield with a population of 4400, and an area of 13.3 square miles. Included within these protected town boundaries are electric transmission line thruways, a gas and oil pipeline, a rail line, an explosives business, 179 commercial businesses, 1776 residences and 1030 out-building structures.\n\nBeyond our town boundaries, we routinely provide local mutual aid to our significantly larger neighbors with extended coverage to an additional ~100 square miles and an extended population exceeding 100,000. Middlefield\u2019s 1st alarm, mutual aid agreement coverage specifically includes the towns of:\nMiddletown CT population ~46,000; \t \nMeriden CT \t population ~59,000:\t \nDurham CT\t population ~ 7,200;\t \nCritical infrastructure in our greater mutual aid area includes:\n- Maurice Rose Army Reserve/ National Guard Base: 164K sq. ft. facility \n- 2- Propane distribution facility with 30K gals, 10 miles away.\n- Connecticut Natural Gas - 1M gals. LP storage facility, 8 mi. away\n- Raytheon Technologies (Pratt & Whitney) DOD contractor for military and civilian jet engines. 1.2M sq. Ft. manufacturing facility, storing 1M gals. of jet fuel.\n- Kleen Energy Systems, LLC -720MW power plant fed by a 12\u2019 high pressure natural gas line w/ oil backup. Stores 8.2M gals of fuel oil on site in two tanks. This facility has a 345KW insulated switchyard with four (4) step-up transformers. The facility also has industrial water treatment plant w/5M gals of storage. This facility had two large incidents that accounted for six fatalities.\n- NRG -770KW oil fired and 200KW natural gas fired power plant, fed by an 8\u201d high pressure gas line and has 5 storage tanks holding 12M gals of fuel. \n- State of Connecticut a -615-bed psychiatric hospital- 1100 acres. This facility has its own power plant, water treatment plant, water supply with 665 acres of reservoirs and 239M gals. Storage.
