City of Saco
As a living example of the impacts of sea-level rise, extreme wet weather events, and climate change, Saco\u2019s facility is in critical need of this federal funding. A resilient headworks will be one of the first steps to empower the Saco community to meet the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goal #6, \u201cClean Water and Sanitation.\u201d Federal funding is shown to have a $6:$1 benefit ratio for overall hazard mitigation and $7:$1 for riverine flooding. We believe Saco would be no exception to this ratio, and the tangible benefits of this investment would be felt for generations after project completion. \nAdministrator Regan, who visited Saco in February 2022, stated: \u201cTreating extra water poses serious challenges, and the risk of raw sewage overflow in the Saco River is a threat to the community . . . so, it\u2019s urgent that cities and towns have effective, resilient systems to better manage wastewater and stormwater and reduce the risk.\u201d Truer statements could not be made. Saco is taking proactive steps to protect the local and regional community from environmental, social, and economic catastrophes of a flooded wastewater treatment plant.
