Project Description

The overall vision for the site of the ferry terminal includes two miles of open public access waterfront along the Arthur Kill; construction of a $47 million marina next door to the project site, which is completed; dredging for commercial port activities; the construction of two commercial docks along with infrastructure to support it; the construction of a 500,000 square-foot film production studio; and 150,000 square feet of ancillary retail and hotel space. The Borough, together with its partners including the NJ Department of Transportation, NJ TRANSIT, NJ Transportation Planning Authority, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, envision improved, faster, and more environmentally friendly transportation options between central New Jersey and New York City via the introduction of daily ferry service and access via NJ TRANSIT bus and Borough jitney services. The project site will include a mixed-use, multimodal ferry building consisting of a passenger terminal/waiting area, educational center, Carteret Port Authority office space, overnight passenger and crew rooms, and a rooftop deck. The project site will also connect to a 20-foot-wide elevated pedestrian boardwalk, fixed pier, floating docks, wave screen, and handicap access ramp. The project encompasses environmental remediation, public access and recreation, economic development, and improved public transportation.
