Project Description

This project is a good use of taxpayer funds because it will reverse adverse environmental impacts to water quality and reduce flooding. Opportunities exist along Hominy Creek to reduce flooding and improve water quality using best management practices, while also rehabilitating wildlife habitat. The project is within several census tracts identified as Areas of Persistent Poverty. \n\nReducing flooding in the area will enhance the quality of life and safety for residents in the neighborhoods in the project area and beyond. The ancillary greenway will enhance health outcomes as well as access to jobs and transit services in this predominately African American and high poverty neighborhood. \n\nThe project enhances economic opportunity by pursuing a design that would close transportation gaps, reduce commuting burdens, and increase the economic productivity of the land around the Hominy Creek through flood reduction and mitigation. Implementation of this plan will reduce flooding events on US 301 at the southern end of the project area, thereby increasing the resiliency of that critical transportation corridor.
