Project Description

The project needs began when the Federal Highway Department began planning the Mid-Town Freeway Project. The highway alignment cut through stable, established neighborhoods resulting in the displacement of hundreds of families, fractured neighborhoods, and the hastening of urban flight. The devastating flood of the 1977 and subsequent flood improvement projects along Brush Creek removed much of the recreation facilities and opportunities along the corridor and further divided this neighborhood. \n\nLand purchased for the flood project was added to the Brush Creek Greenway System, providing an opportunity to create the recreation opportunities the area desperately needs. A recently constructed playground in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, funded by the Patrick Mahomes Foundation, has been a tremendously successful and highlights the need and desire for further recreational opportunities in this section of Kansas City. The area under the bridges of the highway is underutilized and would be ideal for an urban skateboard park concept.
