Project Description

This project is a valuable and responsible use of taxpayer funds as it will go towards designing a long over due terminal expansion at the Des Moines Airport, which serves all Iowans and contributes significantly to the state's economy. \n\nThis project will design the passenger terminal for the Des Moines International Airport, a project that has been in planning stages since 2013. Growth beyond forecasts and prospective airlines aiming to serve the DSM market have resulted in severely constrained operational space for aircraft. Currently all gate parking positions are filled overnight, and only three off-gate positions are available. This project will increase the off-gate parking by designing additional apron space dedicated to passenger aircraft parking. DSM also faces challenges meeting ADA, operational, and inclusivity initiatives with the current terminal building. By completing the design phase for the replacement terminal, DSM will be positioned to compete for additional Federal funds going to construction ready projects under the BIL. \n\nThe community will realize benefits beyond the new terminal with this project, including significant efforts to reduce DSM's environmental impact. Examples include replacement of 50+ year old HVAC systems with modern, more efficient systems; de-ice pads that concentrate Glycol so that is can be recycled rather than sent to the local utility for treatment; and the electrification of ground support equipment, reducing the carbon footprint of airport tenants. \n\nFinally, the new terminal will allow DSM to continue to serve its most critical function which is that of an economic engine for my district. This project will expand the capacity to handle additional aircraft at DSM, leading to expanded routes and airline competition. Both will help to keep airfares lower, resulting in more accessible transportation options for constituents.
