Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA)
Groundwater from several wells in the Spanish Spring area are utilized by Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) to meet peak summer demands in Spanish Springs, serving approximately 18,000 people. Historically, on the west side of the Spanish Spring Valley, nitrate concentrations in groundwater have exceeded nitrate MCL (i.e., 10 mg/L N) and the issue has worsened over time. TMWA blends the water from these wells with treated surface water either from the Chalk Bluff or Glendale facilities, lowering the nitrate levels to less than 5 mg/L N. However, the exacerbation of nitrate contamination of the groundwater and the lack of infrastructure to bring additional blending supplies have made it imperative to identify and develop more efficient treatment strategies to address the issue.
