Currently, the Battery-Electric Vehicle [BEV] with its battery/motor powertrain is causing tremendous disruption within the automotive industry, and this will impact education and training. The future is upon us and is moving at an accelerated pace. The talent requirement for specially-trained technicians and engineers to help manufacturers achieve upgrades in order to rapidly move the industry to electrification is enormous and Washtenaw Community College is positioned to lead the education and training response through its Advanced Transportation Center. \nThe Department of Education\u2019s grant funding comes at a critical time, as it will allow for the development and implementation of education/training for a workforce that will be needed to support innovation and positioning of the Michigan automobile industry both now and in the not-so-distant future. Using taxpayer dollars to fund the development of education and training, and lab equipment to support that training, is critical to both maintaining United States and Michigan GDP and also providing U.S. citizens the opportunity to obtain emerging skill sets that will enable them to earn a middle-class wage, or higher.
