Project Description

Lack of safe walking and bicycling infrastructure is an equity issue for City residents who are unable to drive \u2013 particularly in an area with such high demand for non-motorized modes. This subset of the population includes children, seniors, people with disabilities, and recent immigrants.\n\nStewart Avenue serves as a lifeline for many \u2013 to reach school, essential goods and services, and transit. The proposed project will improve safety and comfort for pedestrians and bicyclists of all ages and ability levels. The improvements will be especially beneficial for the roadway\u2019s most vulnerable users, including the large numbers of children and adolescents who walk along and across Stewart Avenue on a daily basis. \nMuch of the Stewart Avenue corridor is economically distressed, with 28 percent of residents living below the poverty level. Investment in Stewart Avenue roadway infrastructure, including pedestrian, bicycle, and other streetscape improvements is expected to act as a springboard for improving the quality of life for residents and encouraging private investment. The Stewart Avenue project will support good-paying jobs through corridor construction, manufacturing and trade, transportation, and utilities. The project will increase the economic productivity of labor in this region by providing safe, reliable, and efficient access to jobs along the designated route.
