Port of San Diego
The 90+ year-old pier requires significant upgrades and improvements before transforming into a public park, honoring and celebrating Veterans. The Port of San Diego and the USS Midway Museum have partnered together to upgrade the pier and phase one of the project is to complete major pier infrastructure work. The funds requested would directly support that work, to include pier piling upgrades, utility upgrades, building demolition, concrete removal and any environmental impact work. This work ensures the proper foundation prior to building the park. Dynamic educational components throughout the park will tell the story and history of Navy Pier, naval aviation, the USS Midway, and the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice all in the name of Freedom. Other notable elements of Freedom Park include waterfront access, prominent monuments, tributes, and memorials. A dedicated pedestrian promenade will run through grassy areas, shade trees, park benches, and a restroom. Event space will be available to the public for family celebrations, military ceremonies, and more.
